it would be cool if one of the brushes only added colour where the canvas was blank. good for doing large fills or colour washes. or is this already there?

Nope there's no way of doing that at the moment - except changing the whole background colour. I'm looking into adding tools for changing the depth of elements, like "Bring forward" and "Send to back" etc. Thx for the suggestion!.
